HUMP DAY HOOK!

It's Wednesday -- time for the HUMP DAY HOOK, a weekly blog meme where authors post a tempting portion of their writing.
Follow this link for a complete listing of this week's participants: Hump Day Authors. And you can find links to these posts on twitter using the hashtag #HDH.

My hook today comes from my soon-to-be-released Enchanted Skye.

Blurb:
Alexander MacCodrum belongs to a race of shape-shifting sea creatures living on Scotland’s Isle of Skye. When Jenna MacLeod unknowingly adds seven tears to the salt of the sea, she accidentally unleashes an ancient charm that catches the transformed Selkie unawares. Under this binding spell, Alex must win Jenna's heart, or the pain of unrequited love will drive him to take his own life. Unfortunately for Alex, Jenna hasn’t come to Skye looking for love and it will take the force of a hurricane to bring them together. But worse, Jenna’s violent ex-boyfriend has found her at last and Carl has made it perfectly clear – if he can’t have her, no one can.

Setting the Stage: Staying at a local historic inn after an emotionally draining day, all Jenna wanted was a hot bath and a bed. In this scene, she finds herself without a towel. She also discovers she can't remember what room is hers. Her evening is about to get worse.

The Hump Day Hook:
So distracted by the intensity of the day, Jenna now realized she hadn’t really paid attention to which room Bea had put her in. She only knew the décor was green. There were so many doors in the hallway, which one led there? She frowned. The borrowed nightgown was still on the end of the bed, wherever that bed was. Figuring Bea would eventually come to see what was taking so long, she briefly considered filling the tub again and waiting. Growing impatient to get this terrible day over with, she grabbed several small hand towels from a basket on the floor and patted herself down from head to toe as best she could.

She opened the door a crack and listened to a soft rumble of male voices coming from downstairs. Hearing a woman laugh, she determined it was Bea. Who is she talking to? Bea said I was the only guest tonight. Did the storm drive people inside to wait it out?

Peering down the hall in both directions, she was confident she was alone. Now or never. She decided to make a run for it. Shielding herself with a ridiculously small towel, she crept down the hall going door to door looking for anything to help her remember which of the seven rooms was hers. Suddenly Bea’s voice echoed in the stairway. “Knock it off ye great fishy beasties, yer getting’ me all wet!”

The male laughter grew louder. Jenna clearly heard a man on the stairs say, “I’ll get out of these wet clothes and be right down for dinner.” The other man replied, “I’m right behind you.”

She gasped. They're coming up the stairs! Ducking into the nearest room, she quickly closed the door behind her and pressed her ear to the wood to listen.

Startled, Alex spun around. A woman had just barged into his room and closed the door as if she’d been chased inside. That was something all unto itself, but she also held a small towel to the front of her body, leaving the back exquisitely bare. He suddenly felt odd, the same odd feeling he felt at the lighthouse earlier that day.

His heart started to race as realization took him. This beauty was Angus MacLeod’s niece from America. Availing himself of this fortunate vantage point, he looked her over. Her skin was the warm color of honey, her dark hair sparkled with water droplets now, but he knew it would be a rich chestnut brown when dry. Her lovely caramel-colored eyes, he knew, possessed gold-flecked irises and long lashes. Earlier that morning, the smallest details had been burned into his brain. He now added shapely legs, a perfect bottom, and a compelling pair of dimples at her lower back.

She slowly opened the door.

“You might wait a bit. They’re sure t’ be walking back downstairs in a moment.”

The door slammed and she whirled to the voice behind her, doing so closed her towel in the door. Wearing nothing but an astonished expression, she tried to free the towel but the door held fast. Obviously panicked, she frantically worked the doorknob this way and that.

Thunderstruck from the moment she’d turned in all her glory, her frantic yanking of the doorknob jolted him awake. Alex chuckled and said, “Easy love, that latch is auld and loose and were you t' pull harder, it might fall into the wrong place."

She redoubled her efforts.

”Stop now, or we’ll be locked in this room. This is a very auld house, ye know?” No sooner were the words spoken when a loud clunk declared the latch had done exactly what he’d said it might do. “Like that.”
