Trifecta ~ babushka

It's time for another Trifecta, the 99th to be exact, and I'm joining in again. Click here for participants.

Here's how it works this time: Submit a writing with 99 words using this week’s personal choice of Babushka: a headscarf tied under the chin.

I have such a reference in Loving Leonardo -- my Victorian polyamorous romance with a touch of reader-interactive art history.

I give you an encounter with poverty in exactly 99 words.

I’d been in Rome on my grand tour and this visit, as the last, filled me with the same dichotomy of emotion. My eye was caught by a shriveled slovenly woman begging on the street below who had a restless babe in arms tugging at her babushka and no fewer than seven hungry, filthy children in orbit around her skirts. Nearby, a rotund cardinal with his bright red robes and matching wide-brimmed biretta walked past them happily devouring his pastry without giving the starving children a second glance, not even the toddling child who held out a beseeching hand.

  1. Oh! Such a sad write... again the distinction between the 'haves' and 'have nots'. Very well portrayed.

  5. And it was a rotund cardinal. I went to Catholic school for many years, so it resonated with me. Nice job.

  9. Now that says a lot in such a brief account. One really must wonder where the morals lie in those who supposedly represent them.
