Paranormal Love Wednesdays

It's Wednesday and I'm participating in Paranormal Love Wednesdays. This is a new mini blog hop for me and it looks like fun. Link to participants. Today I'm offering the introduction from my legend-inspired paranormal romance ~ The Witchy Wolf and the Wendigo

The True Beginning

Ten years ago, a reporter for a small-town newspaper heard word of strange dawn and dusk sightings of a wolf-like creature roaming the Wisconsin countryside. Her investigation revealed the local police officials had initially taken these calls lightly, but this had changed when calls began coming from upstanding citizens.

Authorities had determined what these eyewitnesses had actually seen was a lone wolf broken off from a pack running in the wilds of northern Wisconsin. Young male wolves seeking to start a new pack are known to strike off on their own. Leaving the vast stretches of wooded landscape, they might travel one hundred miles in a day. It seemed likely. However, the witnesses were adamant that what they’d seen had been no ordinary wolf. This wolf walked like a man.

Intrigued, the reporter collected the stories. To her surprise, other witnesses came forward telling of sightings that they’d never reported. In fact, some eyewitness accounts had occurred more than seventy years prior, the details only whispered to relatives who were sworn to secrecy lest friends and neighbors think heavy drinking was involved. These stories she also collected, for she knew hushed secrecy was not a direction fame-seekers usually take.

More curious now, the reporter deepened her investigation and uncovered another bizarre detail: the sightings were mentioned in ancient oral traditions of the Native Americans in the region. In those tales, dog men or witchy wolves looked after burial mounds in much the same way jackal-headed Anubis guarded the tombs of ancient Egypt. And even more bizarre, early French explorers knew of them too. They called these wolf-men the loup-garou.

@MySexySaturday #MySexySaturday #Saturday7 #MSSAuthors

It's My Sexy Saturday! Participating authors post 7 paragraphs, 7 sentences, or 7 words. The theme this week is You're So Sexy. This time it's 7 paragraphs from book one in my ongoing series ~ The Witchy Wolf and the Wendigo.

Setting the Stage:

After a failed attempt to end his life, ancient shaman Ash finds himself in the modern world of white men. The woman Livie took him home to care for his wounds. The moment Livie leaves him, Ash makes plans to return to his cave to die. Then he hears her singing in the shower...

My Seven:
Ash couldn’t help but notice her half-bare breasts, noticed too the warm sent of her skin and the intoxicating memory it stirred. Livie smelled like a woman under the light scent of meadow flowers, and her kiss was sweet and soft. Watching her go, he was surprised by the sudden compulsion to follow. With his awkward three-legged gait, by the time he made it to the stairs, most of her clothing was off. He was surprised by a fleeting rush of desire. To his further surprise, it came with an urge to change into a man.

He stood there gazing up the stairway. His heart ached to feel another’s embrace just once before he ended this life. An unbidden yearning for Livie came, a thought so foreign to his mind it was nearly unrecognizable. Ash shifted uncomfortably, as his body remembered nonetheless. Turning away, he headed to the door. She was busy, he could leave now. His keen ears heard the small sounds she made — running water, her soft footsteps, singing. The singing did it.

Without further thought, he took a deep breath. In a flash his form shifted. Reducing in size until his limbs disappeared into his body, Ash assumed the form of a snake. He slithered out of his cast and bandages. With nostalgia plucking at his heart strings, he glided up the stairs, following the lovely sound of a female voice accompanied by running water. It was a sound he fondly remembered from his life. He found Livie standing under a spray, a white curtain showing only her silhouette. He coiled there a moment, remembering how the women of his village sang beside the babbling stream as they bathed. Her voice made him happy. Three thousand years had passed with that emotion as much a stranger to him as the desire prompted by seeing Livie unclothed had been.

Needing more emotional succor, his strong stomach muscles clenched and propelled his serpent’s body upward until he was above the rod. Looking down, he found Livie foamy and slippery-looking. Her eyes were closed against the inexplicably hot and steaming water that sprayed her face. Ash tested the moist air with his forked tongue. While his sense of smell in this form was not as keen as in his wolf form, he could tell the lather was the source of the meadow flower scent on her skin. He felt a man’s desire again and was just about to slither onto the showerhead when the water unexpectedly stopped. An instant later, the curtain pulled back and knocked him to the floor behind the toilet.

Recoiling under the sink in an attempt to remain unseen, Ash watched her step from the bath tub. Sparkling beads of water trickled down her bare skin, rolling down her shapely legs to her small feet tipped in toenails colored like the inside of a river shell. Livie possessed rounded curves and beautiful breasts to fill a man’s hands. She had wide hips for bearing strong sons and daughters. A painful memory brought him back to reality. Frowning sadly, he took his dark thoughts and quietly slid along the wall and out the door.

Ash worked his way down the stairs to where the cast and bandages lay. Again and again he tried to arrange his body to allow himself back into the bindings. But each time he took a larger form, the cast would turn uncomfortably. Hearing Livie’s movements upstairs, Ash knew he had little time. His attempts to replace the bandages and cast were futile. He did the only thing he could think of: taking the form of a black bear, he crushed the cast into bits with his strong jaws. Resuming the  form of the wolf, he picked up the bandage in his mouth and waited for her at the bottom of the stairs.

And that was how Olivia found him.

Sexy Snippets!

It's Sunday and time for Sexy Snippets! Participants post just seven sentences to capture the imagination. Today, I'm offering a small sampling from The Witchy Wolf and the Wendigo (Book 1 Ashkewheteasu)

Setting the stage:  Livie has no idea the wolf-cross dog she's fostering has a secret.

My 7:
Later that night, Ash in wolf form curled along Olivia’s body as she settled into sleep. Her muscles twitched and relaxed, the stresses of the day slipping away until she breathed steady and lie still. Confident that she slept soundly, Ash took human form and held her close. He’d only give himself this joy for a moment. With his chest against her bare back, he felt his heartbeat harmonize with hers. An instant later, he assumed his previous form and snuggled closer, a contented wolfish smile on his face and his mind open for dreams.

My Sexy Saturday! #SaturdayScenes

It's My Sexy Saturday! Participating authors post 7 paragraphs, 7 sentences, or 7 words. For me, this time it's 7 paragraphs from The Witchy Wolf and the Wendigo (book 1 in the ongoing series)

Setting the Stage:
Ash and Livie spent the day attending the birth of a colt and shared a profound moment after the mare dies. Here they give in to a growing desire.

My 7:
He smiled.

A short time later, Olivia hurried up the walkway, Ash following behind. Pausing to find the right key to fit into the lock, she said, “I have to file some paperwork before I head home to my—” and Ash surprised her, pulling her into his arms and kissing her. Her sentence ended breathlessly, “—dog.”

His lower half pressed firmly against hers, he effectively pinned her up against the door. With palms flat against the glass on either side of her head, he braced himself and kissed her again, sliding his tongue hungrily between her soft pink lips. And there they stood, each lost in the wonder of what the other made them feel, oblivious to the cars speeding past the clinic. The next she knew, her shirt and bra had somehow hitched up and bared her breasts to kisses that traced their descent in a fiery path down her neck and left a glorious wash of desire in their wake. There was no mistaking the warm female scent that declared she wanted him as desperately as he wanted her. Just as his head dipped to draw her pink nipple into his mouth, a truck driver’s horn blared as the big rig passed. The spell broken, they jumped apart. Ash looked far more startled than she. Mortified, Olivia quickly covered herself with fumbling hands. Apparently backlit by the lights within the clinic, they’d put on a good show.

He licked the taste of her from his lips and smiled at her endearing attempt at modesty. After so many years alone, controlling himself was difficult. As much as he craved to lose himself in her, this was not the place for their first joining. Wrapping his arms around her once more, he summoned his willpower, and whispered warmly at her ear, “Oh Livie, I would have you now, but not here for others to see.”

She swallowed, then stammered, “Uh, yes, uh we’d better stop before we run out of time and I um … I need to finish up the … uh … paperwork here.” She sounded like her brains had been addled. They had. “So … where do I pick you up?”

“I’ll meet you right here.” His passionate embrace lifting her to her toes and cracking her vertebrae, he kissed her again.
Closing the door behind him, Olivia watched him walk away.

Her lips were tingling. Everything was tingling. Good God.

Marketing for Romance Writers' Books Hooks #MFRWhooks

MFRW Authors Blog
It's Wednesday and time for the Marketing for Romance Writers Books Hooks mini hop! (see linky list below) Participants post 6-8 sentences from their novel. Today I'm offering a bit from The Witchy Wolf and the Wendigo.  (book 1 in the series Ashkewheteasu)

Setting the Stage~
Enveloped in a tormented haze from a shaman's pain ordeal, Ash's consciousness touches the Manitou
and shares his heart. Unbeknown to Ash, his teacher Eluwilussit is using Ash's pain as a key to unlock the door to the spirit realm. That door has been closed to Eluwilussit since he first committed murder. He's growing desperate.

My 8~

He had asked for the wisdom to do his best for his people and his wife. The embodiment of God said, “Ashkewheteasu, why do you ask nothing for yourself?”

Ash replied, “Because, Sky Father, caring for them is enough.”

The Manitou spoke again. “The way is not always clear nor is it free of pain, but time brings understanding of all things.” Then silence.

The message received, Ash’s legs buckled under his exhausted and weakened body. Consciousness left him as he collapsed to the ground, tearing the pins from his flesh as he went.

My Sexy Saturday #MySexySaturday #SaturdayScenes

It's My Sexy Saturday! Participating authors post 7 paragraphs, 7 sentences, or 7 words. For me, this time it's 7 short paragraphs from book 2 in The Witchy Wolf and the Wendigo series ~ An ongoing tale based on ancient lore and an unbelievable urban legend that even has credible eyewitnesses!

Setting the Stage:
Ash and Livie have become lovers and he knows more about the significance of this fact than she does. It's the morning after and they must leave. Eluwilussit comes for them. Time is short and they've taken too much time as it is.

My 7:
He chuckled. It felt good to play and laugh with her. “I was happy to discover there was no dog in a hot dog.”

Still laughing, she got up to clear their plates, but he pulled her down to straddle his lap. She laced her fingers behind his neck and looked at him expectantly.

Brushing her hair back, Ash gazed lovingly into her eyes. He could see her spirit reflected in them and now he realized he always had. “How is it I’ve found you?”

Her hands caressed his shoulders. Wanting more, they glided down his chest to tease his nipples through his flannel shirt. What was it about this guy that made her completely insatiable?

He pressed his face to her breasts and breathed in her meadow-flower scent. “I would love you again Livie --”

That admission was good enough for her. She kissed the top of his head and murmured against the midnight silk, “Let’s go back upstairs.”

He wanted that more than anything but their bath and breakfast had taken time they didn’t have. Even though their love was new and they both desired to lose themselves in it, there was danger coming here. They needed to leave.

Cupping her face, he met her eyes. “As much as I desire this and my love, you have no idea how I am fighting to be strong — we must pack and leave this place.”

"This book is amazing. The story is fast, the emotion as high as the suspense. The ending will be completely unexpected." - A Happy Reader

Sexy Snippets!

Another Sunday and another Sexy Snippets! The idea is to post just seven sentences to capture the imagination. Today, I'm offering another small sampling from book 2 in The Witchy Wolf and the Wendigo series.

Setting the Stage: Knowing Eli comes for Ash, John and Cora, and Ash and Livie have gone north to the safety of John's aunt and uncle's home on the reservation. It's a cozy house. Hearing the telltale sounds of Ash and Livie's lovemaking through the thin bedroom walls, Cora gets an idea.

 My snippet:
John chuckled, “I’m glad they’ve gotten on.”

Cora laughed quietly, “I’d say they’re getting it on.” Sure enough, the tempo cooled and silence followed. Her hand closed around him.

“What are you up to there, girl? You say I make too much noise.”

“If we hurry, your aunt and uncle will think it’s them.”

My Sexy Saturday!

It's My Sexy Saturday! This fun mini hop is celebrating its 50th week today and I'm happy to be a part of it. For me, this time it's 7 paragraphs from The Witchy Wolf and the Wendigo (book 1 in the series). I was inspired to write this story after reading of actual sightings in Wisconsin. Upstanding citizens said they saw a wolf walking on two legs like a man. What else could it be but an ancient shape-shifting shaman?

Setting the Stage~
In this scene, Ash wakes to find himself in a cage. Seeking to end his life after his wife's burial was destroyed, he assumed a shifted form of an oddly-marked wolf and stepped in front of a moving car. Luckily the driver was a veterinarian who took him to the clinic for emergency surgery. Here Ash meets one of the vets that saved his life,John Redleaf.

My Seven~

Ash woke in a haze. His slitted eyes took in extremely bright light and strange gleaming objects all around him. And from all sides came the sound of barking and mewling. His body and mind felt odd. He tried to stand.

“Whoa puppy, lie down.” A female voice spoke through the haze. He recognized the language, having heard it spoken for the last hundred and fifty years. The white man’s words were just one of many languages he’d learned as people came and left the area. He knew the language of every animal and bird he shifted into. Immediate understanding was a gift from the Sky Father.
“How’s Wolfie doing?”

What is happening to me? Ash squeezed his eyes shut. It sounded like the woman’s voice had changed to a man’s voice. Ash opened his eyes again and peered through thin wire bars. There was a man standing there talking with a small-statured young woman. He had heard two voices. The female voice spoke again,

“I was just about to fill his water dish, Doctor.” Her words were followed by the sound of running water nearby.

A face appeared before him and he was surprised to see the man was of the People.

Aniish na niikaanis? The man asked as if he expected an answer, as if he genuinely cared how his “brother” was doing. But Ash could not speak. In this form he could only bark or howl. There was nothing to do but give his tail a slight wag. The man smiled.
