Saturday's After Dark Moments

I'm participating in something new today -- Saturday's After Dark Moments. A mini hop for erotic romance. For me, this time it's a few paragraphs from my award-winning Loving Leonardo.
 

In this scene: The Leonardo da Vinci conversation takes an intimate turn (condensed from a larger piece to capture the moment)

In Great Britain the topic on the table was not usually discussed in a lady’s presence. Not that my nymph of a wife minded, indeed, she voiced it plain enough. Luca didn’t answer right away, instead he sipped his wine. I wished in that moment I could read his thoughts for he appeared nervous. I wished for a lot in that moment.

Luca met her eye. “Did you know the ancient Greeks didn’t consider sexual proclivity to be a social characteristic? They didn’t distinguish a person’s sexual desire by biological sex, only by the role that he or she played in the act.”

Ellie took on her lovely blush, and for the first time I realized both desire and discomfiture lie within the hue. She asked plainly, “Do you mean to say all that mattered in ancient society was whether someone played the active penetrator or the passively penetrated?”

Bold-as-brass. I chuckled.

Luca’s smile widened and his shadow-blue eyes sparkled. “Yes.”

I believe we were all aware of a sexual tension growing in the intellectual-rich loam. There were little things at play now: the way Ellie moistened her lips and looked at us with eyes that lingered from one to the other. The way Luca’s irises had darkened from snow shadow to moon shadow as he looked upon her. The way I’d catch myself with a reminder to breathe as my eye was drawn to these small distinctions. Like da Vinci’s sfumato, our mutual attraction hung in the air, and I was struck by the notion that the smoky quality depicted in his art was desire. Desire like this.

“Ah.” Ellie nodded in understanding and circled the rim of her wine glass with her fingertip. I could feel the gears turning in the perfect machine of her mind. She proved my estimation right when she laughed suddenly, “Why Signore Franco, I do believe you’ve evaded my original question.”

He touched his heart with mock surprise. “Would I do that?”

That made Ellie laugh just as she was about to sip her red wine, causing her to slosh it on her white silk blouse. “Fiddlesticks! Please excuse me gentlemen, I must see to this before it sets.” Giving us an adorable self-deprecating smile, she quickly excused herself. We watched her go and shortly after the tap ran in the bathroom.

To a man such as I who’d lived on the same side of the fence for so many years, Luca’s answer had been plain enough. There was a silent language men like us used in public that only those of the same persuasion might guess what lie below the surface. Society might speculate all it wished, but unless the intent was blatant, no one knew of it for certain. In a world of unfounded prejudice, discretion might save one’s life. Our eyes met. We knew.

HUMP DAY HOOK!

It's Wednesday and time for a HUMP DAY HOOK. The weekly event has been refitted to be a themed weekly event. I like themes. Sometimes it's hard to come up with a new hook and a theme gives you something to look for. How this works is same as before -- authors post a tempting portion of their writing following the theme of the week.
This week's theme is Intrigue so I've chosen a bit from Loving Leonardo (book 1 in the series)


Setting the scene: Carlos Posateri is about to acquire the book that will send Nicolas and Ellie on a whirlwind course to danger and love.



My Hook:
Curiously, tonight’s meeting had been arranged by a different man. He’d received a note from one E. Fortuna describing several antique books in his employer’s possession, including one of homoerotic art reminiscent of Leonardo da Vinci’s work. Quoting a price, Fortuna added he’d also contacted other potential buyers, no doubt to spur him to act quickly. But in the span of a day, a second note arrived. This one from Signore Falconetti, saying the book changed hands and was still for sale. What happened to E. Fortuna?

Setting the stage: Luca kisses Ellie, and Nicolas feels it as surely as if he were the one being kissed.


Meeting his eye, I silently mouthed, “Come to me.” He gave me an engaging wink over the top of her head. Instead of coming to me, the tease moistened his lips with his tongue and shook his head. Then taking Ellie’s hands, he bid her rise. Enfolding her in his arms, he wound the braid into his large hand. When he kissed her deeply, he also kissed my mind through her. And heaven help me, I felt the power of it keenly.

Setting the Stage:
Newlyweds Nicolas and Ellie discover surprising truths about one another. For one, Nicolas isn't solely attracted to men after all. How will this change once Luca comes into their lives?



My snippet:

Sharing our secrets not only brought Ellie and I to complete understanding of our dual natures, but the nature of one another as well. As a result, we spent our intimate moments like the epicures of ancient Rome — engaged in complete sensorial experience of our mating and the contemplative wonder that came after. 

 It had become our custom after these sublime engagements to talk while still wrapped in each other’s arms, for it was then that our minds harmonized best. Immersed in her as I was, words of love formed in my mind and this time she was awake to hear them. She’d yet to verbally acknowledge her feelings for me, but I couldn’t deny the change in her touch or the noticeable lover’s daydream in her eyes when she looked at me. What began as curiosity transformed into loving. I was sure of it. Still, I wanted the words.

My Sexy Saturday 7!

Here's the scoop: Participating authors will post 7 paragraphs, 7 sentences, or 7 words. For me, this time it's 7 short paragraphs from book2 in the Loving Leonardo series:
Loving Leonardo - The Quest

Setting the Stage:
Luca has gone missing. Nicolas is desperate to find him before Conte Bruno does. With the help of Will, a man who knows his way around the darker corners of Victoria's London, Nicolas delves into the seedier corners of the dockside. In this scene, Nicolas asks the serving girl if she's seen a highborn Italian traveling with three servants. Quite unexpectedly, he finds someone else.

I give you 7:
She nodded and tipped her head to the far corner of the room. “I got asked by the two young blokes sittin’ over there. I think they came in just minutes before you, but like I said, we’ve been hoppin’. The small one there did the askin’.”

“Thank you, Bonnie.”

She bobbed her head and left us. My eye sought the far corner and I blanched at what I found. There sat Ned Cooper, Mrs. Fletcher’s house boy, and beside him, dressed in men's attire with her mass of curls tucked under an overlarge cap, my wife.

Will nudged me. “Who do you suppose they are?”

I turned to him, my very words sounding stupefied to my ears. “Bloody hell. Will, that impetuous creature over there is my wife dressed as a man.”

“Oh Jesus, Mary, and Joseph. Pardon me for saying it sir, but whatever was she thinkin’? These men aren’t out for a bleedin’ tea party, they’re murderers!”

I seriously doubted much thought was involved. Our man sits within our grasp and my hands were now quite tied. I told Will, “I must get her out of here. We’ll have to abandon our efforts tonight.”

I loved Rose Anderson's sequel to Loving Leonardo. Both books are great reads. How she followed each character to each ones conclusion was masterful. It was a fun and exciting read and I couldn't put it down.
