HUMP DAY HOOK!

It's Wednesday and time for a HUMP DAY HOOK. The weekly event has been refitted to be a themed weekly event. I like themes. Sometimes it's hard to come up with a new hook and a theme gives you something to look for. How this works is same as before -- authors post a tempting portion of their writing following the theme of the week.
This week's theme is Intrigue so I've chosen a bit from Loving Leonardo (book 1 in the series)


Setting the scene: Carlos Posateri is about to acquire the book that will send Nicolas and Ellie on a whirlwind course to danger and love.



My Hook:
Curiously, tonight’s meeting had been arranged by a different man. He’d received a note from one E. Fortuna describing several antique books in his employer’s possession, including one of homoerotic art reminiscent of Leonardo da Vinci’s work. Quoting a price, Fortuna added he’d also contacted other potential buyers, no doubt to spur him to act quickly. But in the span of a day, a second note arrived. This one from Signore Falconetti, saying the book changed hands and was still for sale. What happened to E. Fortuna?

HUMP DAY HOOK!

It's Wednesday and time for a HUMP DAY HOOK. The weekly event has been refitted to be a themed weekly event. I like themes. Sometimes it's hard to come up with a new hook and a theme gives you something to look for. How this works is same as before -- authors post a tempting portion of their writing following the theme of the week.
This week's theme is Action so I've chosen a bit from book 2 in The Witchy Wolf and the Wendigo.

Setting the scene: Cora asks Ash to show the others what he looked like when Livie ran him over with her car. 

My Hook:

You could have heard a pin drop. Then Mayweather, Abbie, and John all rushed to say it was not necessary. Although Cora had only asked to see the dog, this was a sacred gift, not a sideshow.

Ash laughed and taking Cora’s hand, gave it a squeeze. “I would be honored to show this gift to you and I thank you for suggesting it. It’s important to me that you understand what was given to me and what I am because of it.” He went on to explain his grief and his request to watch over his wife’s grave forever. He did not explain the rest. Perhaps one day he’d tell John. Rising from his chair, he stood in the middle of the floor. “Since the gift was given — in all these years — I’ve only ever shared this with John and Livie.”

They watched transfixed as Ash drew a breath and disappeared. All that remained was a heap of clothing and a pair of shoes. May and Cora gasped. Abbie’s eyes grew wide in disbelief. Winston went to sniff the empty clothes. Having seen this miracle before, John and Livie just smiled at one another. It was far from boring.

A small brown snake slithered to the top of the pile of clothes. Winston took a step backward in a dog’s natural wariness of snakes. Suddenly the snake became a fat field mouse. The mouse shifted into a small rabbit. Ears reducing, the rabbit became a skunk then quick as a wink it became a coyote. The coyote’s snout and legs lengthened and the wolf with the unusual markings took its place. He sat and gave them a very wolfish grin. 

His tail wagging wildly, Winston leaned in to sniff, his sensitive nose at odds with what his one eye could see.

Seeing her lost pet, Olivia’s heart ached a little. “That’s what he looked like.”

The wolf shifted suddenly into a deer and then small moose, and just as quickly a large black bear stood on his hind legs. Winston pranced out of the way.

Jo walked in the room, Tony just behind him, and seeing the bear yelled, “Holy … get back!” Jo thrust his arm out to shove the tribal elder further behind him, and just as fast pulled a gun from his holster. He aimed it squarely at the bear’s heart.

Chairs crashing to the floor, Abbie and John jumped up and dashed in front of the bear, shouting in unison, “No! Don’t shoot!” Winston barked loudly.

Just as fast, the bear was gone and a naked man remained. Ash held out his hands. “You must be Jo the rez cop, and you must be Tony Reed. Boozhoo, my brothers.”

Cora’s mouth dropped open. Society had lost much when it made nudity an embarrassment. But that was obviously long after his time. Ash was stunning, and he made no move to dress. 

Mayweather covered her mouth with both hands and looked at him in awe. Olivia stifled a giggle.

Tony Reed leaned against the doorframe, murmuring, “Oh my god. Oh. My. God.”

Jo blinked. Holstering his firearm, he stepped forward and clasped the man’s hands. Embarrassed, he said, “Forgive me Ashkewheteasu. I thought you were a bear that would harm my family.”

Ash patted the dog beside him. “Any soldier would risk his life to protect his loved ones. Don’t apologize for protecting your family, Jo. And please, call me Ash. I have left my old name in the past.”

HUMP DAY HOOK

It's Wednesday and I usually have a HUMP DAY HOOK. For a while it looked like the HDH was over, but I'm happy to say it's on again. I just discovered the weekly event has been refitted into a themed weekly event. I like themes. Sometimes it's hard to come up with a new hook and a theme gives you something to look for.

Enchanted Skye
A modern family of Selkies and an ancient and potentially deadly charm.

Alexander MacCodrum belongs to a race of shape-shifting sea creatures living on Scotland’s Isle of Skye. When Jenna MacLeod unknowingly adds seven tears to the salt of the sea, she accidentally unleashes an ancient charm that catches the transformed Selkie unawares. Under this binding spell, Alex must win Jenna's heart, or the pain of unrequited love will drive him to take his own life. Unfortunately for Alex, Jenna hasn’t come to Skye looking for love and it will take the force of a hurricane to bring them together. But worse, Jenna’s violent ex-boyfriend has found her at last and Carl has made it perfectly clear – if he can’t have her, no one can.

Best hiding in plain sight:
Like him, his brothers Lachlan and Gavin, and Beatrix and their father, all lived equally in the surf and in the town. They were Selkies, as were the rest of Clan MacCodrum spread over Scotland and the islands of the Hebrides. Save for seven shifters scattered through the larger extended family, his cousins were mostly fishermen, and all possessed a sea creature’s intuition when it came to finding the good haul. That his Irish mother carried the Roan gene, though wasn’t one herself, was the reason his branch of the family line had more shifters than not.

Doled out for tourists, the local legends pointed fingers at their family’s romantic origins but the tales were no different than those about the bogie man, faerie folk, or ghostly specters on the moors. No one took them seriously for all they were true. He and his siblings went to the pub on occasion and if there were tourists a neighbor would rib them good naturedly. The latest being, “Where ye hidin’ yer seal skin, Lachlan?” to which his eldest brother replied, “Now if I tell ye Ronnie Nash, and ye find it, I’ll have to wed ye! And man, yer not my type!”

The tourists loved it and the locals howled, and god love them, none saw the truth right before their eyes. That was another Selkie gift, the gift of glamour. You only saw what a Selkie wanted you to see. 

The Witchy Wolf and the Wendigo

Based on an actual urban legend and ancient mythology
What does an immortal Native American shaman do when the grave he’s sworn to watch over for all eternity disappears under urban development?
His purpose of guarding his wife’s burial mound gone, Ashkewheteasu seeks to end his immortal existence. In his despair, he assumes the form of a wolf and steps in front of a moving car and into the life of Dr. Olivia “Livie” Rosalini. The veterinarian saves the animal’s life, and in the process saves the man within. Unbeknownst to Livie, the dog she’s taken into her home and grows to love is a magical being seeking to win her heart as a man. While Ash is learning a new world filled with new love, friendship, and happiness, an old menace makes plans to steal it all away; just as he had 3000 years before.

Best Slapstick by an Ancient Shaman:
Knowing he had to resume his wolf form at Livie’s home, he took a deep breath and shifted, but his inebriated mind was not concentrating and he ended up with a raven’s head atop his man’s body. He tried again. Forgetting that he still wore clothes, he found himself a small bird, pinned and struggling under the heavy garments that had fallen to the ground in a heap. He shifted into a feathered snake before taking the form of a mouse and working his way out of a sleeve.

The movement caught the attention of an owl on its nightly hunting foray. Just as it was about to swoop low on silent wings, intent on nabbing the large field mouse, a naked man with a mouse tail and whiskers appeared. The owl, clearly startled, flew off into the night. Laughing, Ash raised his arms and yelled after it, “This is not your night, my brotherrrr!”

Tail and whiskers absorbed into his changing form and once again bare skin grew feathers. He shifted into a raven — a six-foot-tall raven. Laughing at himself, he made his body small and flew fast to Livie’s home, albeit not in a straight line.

Best Love at First Sight:
When in the presence of true beauty, my mind often imagines the person unclothed as the artists of the ages might have seen him. Sitting at my table was a statue carved in marble by Gian Lorenzo Bernini; an artist known for his remarkable ability to capture the essence of a narrative moment. And I found Luca Franco to be exactly that — a moment indelibly captured in time — a moment of meeting the mind could revisit in its entirety.

From every angle, he was beautifully made: black-haired, of medium build, and physically fit. He possessed a warm hue to his skin, his lineage no doubt stamped centuries past by the darker Moors or Turks. In startling contrast, and quite handsomely framed by black lashes, he had striking eyes the color one might see in a shadow falling across snow — not quite sky blue nor exactly steel gray, but a blending of the two in gradated rings.

I rose to shake his hand and felt the unmistakable current of compatibility. If this man weren’t forward in his mutual attraction, it was there nonetheless.

Dreamscape
A haunting, a murder, a mystery, a reader's puzzle, and a love story that transcends time.

HUMP DAY HOOK!

It's Wednesday -- time for the HUMP DAY HOOK, a weekly blog meme where authors post a tempting portion of their writing.

This week I offer the legend from Enchanted Skye.

My Hook:
In the Celtic lands, there are tales told of seals who walk the earth as men and women. From the coastal areas of Scotland and Ireland to the Shetland Islands, on to the Hebrides, and up to the northern Faroe Isles, these seal people are known for their dark beauty and lovely brown eyes. Legend has it they are able to doff their waterskins and live as any human might. They are the Selkies and Roans of lore.
Such women are much desirable as wives, as there are none better able to love a man. A man fortunate enough to come upon a Selkie woman sunning on the rocks may take her to wife, provided he hide her seal skin and hide it well. For no matter her love of him and the children she bears him, the call of the sea will take her away the moment she finds her hidden skin. A Selkie man, with his seductive ways, will come and go, and take his fill of any woman who catches his eye. Only if she adds seven tears to the salt of the sea, however, can she capture his wild heart.

 Rose Anderson writes beautifully every time, and Enchanted Skye is no different. She makes me believe in selkies, makes me want to BE a selkie, her descriptions of their legends and lives are so intimate and lovely.
