Sexy Snippets

It's Sunday and time for Sexy Snippets. Participants post just seven sentences to capture the imagination. Today I'm offering a small sampling from Enchanted Skye ~ a contemporary Celtic tale with an ancient charm, a woman in hiding, and a very sexy Selkie.



Setting the Stage~ Alex feels odd and for good reason. When this stranger's tear drops fell into the sea they unleashed a potentially deadly charm upon him.

My Seven~
He didn’t recognize this young woman on the land but watched her kneel before the pool. Her sable hair covered her face as she keened and for some reason he felt compelled to go to her side. He slid into the water and the closer he drew, the stranger he felt. Only feet from her now, he blinked the saltwater from his eyes and watched her. The wind whipped at her hair and the sea mist clung to her clothing as she hugged an urn tightly to her chest. He knew what he was seeing then -- they’d scattered ashes on the water. Who was she to Angus MacLeod?

My Sexy Saturday!

It's My Sexy Saturday! Participating authors post 7 paragraphs, 7 sentences, or 7 words. For me, this time it's 7 sentences from Enchanted Skye. 

Setting the Stage~
Grief, frustration, and stress -- the last two weeks were a whirlwind of heartbreaking change for Jenna. To top it off, last night she found herself locked in a room with a stranger. Here Jenna wakes with only a vague recollection of reckless drinking and crying her eyes out on the man's shoulder. Then she sees the owner of that shoulder in the bed beside her. Her recollection is hazy.

My Seven~     
Getting into such a spot with a complete stranger was way out of character for her. What’s more, she had no clear image of what occurred between them. Small recollections came drifting back. He’d held her while she cried. He’d kissed her. Or did I kiss him? She remembered lots of kissing, remembered too being carried to the bed and wanting to be there.

It's Wednesday and time for the Marketing for Romance Writers Books Hooks mini hop! (see linky list below) Participants post 6-8 sentences from their novel. Today I'm offering a bit from Enchanted Skye ~ a contemporary love story with an ancient twist.

Setting the Stage~
After being at sea for the last several months, Alex watches a woman scattering ashes in the tidal pool and begins to feel strange. He has no idea she just innocently trapped him in an ancient and potentially deadly charm. He returns home to see if his sister Beatrix knows who this lovely stranger is.

My 8~Meeting his eyes, she looked startled to see him so close. She rose slowly and backed away. 

His heart ached to watch her go and he found the feeling both perplexing and extraordinary. Then and there, he knew he had to meet her. Taking a breath, he plunged under the water and swam to the far side of the cliff where the sea cave sat undetected. On dry land now, inside the dark chamber, he peeled away his waterskin. And where flippers were a moment before, a man’s arms and legs appeared. Shaking out his spotted skin with a snap, he rolled it into a tight bundle and headed toward the passage.

Setting the Stage~

My Seven~
She frowned, remembering exactly why she’d slammed that scotch -- it was because she was locked in. On top of her grief and fearful departure, the stress of one more thing spiraling out of control got the better of her.
Bang!
Folding the pillow around her throbbing head, she softly groaned into it, “Oh my god, enough with the noise already.” Turning away from the sound, Jenna came in contact with a warm firm body lying beside her. Carefully inching away, she lowered the pillow and opened her eyes. It was him.

My Seven~
     He watched with mild interest from the rocks, but when Angus and the reverend walked back to the house, his interest got the better of him. He scooted a little closer and lifted his head to get a better view. He didn’t recognize this young woman on the land but watched her kneel before the pool. Her dark sable hair covered her face as she keened and for some reason he felt compelled to go to her side. He slid into the water and the closer he drew, the stranger he felt. Only feet from her now, he blinked the saltwater from his eyes and watched her. The wind whipped at her hair and the sea mist clung to her clothing as she hugged an urn tightly to her chest. He knew what he was seeing then. They’d scattered ashes on the water. He considered her. Who was this woman to Angus MacLeod? 
    The woman must have felt his presence for she looked up from her grief. Meeting his eyes, she looked startled to see him so close. She rose slowly and backed away. 
     His heart ached to watch her go and he found the feeling both perplexing and extraordinary. Then and there, he knew he had to meet her. Taking a breath, he plunged under the water and swam to the far side of the cliff where the sea cave sat undetected. On dry land now, inside the dark chamber, he peeled away his waterskin. And where flippers were a moment before, a man’s arms and legs appeared. Shaking out his spotted skin with a snap, he rolled it into a tight bundle and headed toward the passage.
    The limestone tunnel itself was ancient, dug by his ancestors at a time when the zealous went in search of blood, and beings like him were hunted to near extinction. The tunnel led from the sea to his family’s other home and his other life as Alexander MacCodrum. He put a hand to a hidden door, one of several in the mansion, and it made a dry scraping sound as he pulled it open. Giving the back of the bookcase a shove, the weighted mechanism swung wide to reveal a bright sunny library.
    A woman’s voice came from the floor by the hearth, “Och, Alex you scared me! Come in, you’re scattering the ash with that draft.” Like that of her brothers, Bea’s Scottish burr tended to get thicker with emotion. With a soot-smudged nose and long black hair tied up in a kerchief, Beatrix MacCodrum sat back on her heels and looked him over from head to toe. He’d strategically repositioned the waterskin the instant he heard her shriek. Other than that, he wore nothing but his smile.
     She shook her head. “Tch, dinna you ever think to leave your clothes in the cave to change into? You know I might ha’ been sitting here with guests.”
    “That would ha’ been interesting, no?” He chuckled. “I haven’t been home in a while.”

Another Sunday and another Sexy Snippets!

The idea is to post just seven sentences to capture the imagination. Today, I'm offering another small sampling from Enchanted Skye -- a tale of hidden identity, dangerous obsession, an ancient charm, and oh...there are Selkies too.



 What about that MacCodrum family? Alex reflects:

My seven:
Doled out for tourists, the local legends pointed fingers at their family’s romantic origins but the tales were no different than those about the bogie man, faerie folk, or ghostly specters on the moors. No one took them seriously for all they were true. He and his siblings went to the pub on occasion and if there were tourists a neighbor would rib them good-naturedly. The latest being, “Where ye hidin’ yer seal skin, Lachlan?” to which his eldest brother replied, “Now if I tell ye Ronnie Nash, and ye find it, I’ll have to wed ye! And man yer not my type!”
 
The tourists loved it and the locals howled, and god love them, none saw the truth right before their eyes.

"Rose Anderson writes beautifully every time, and Enchanted Skye is no different. She makes me believe in selkies, makes me want to BE a selkie, her descriptions of their legends and lives are so intimate and lovely. The selkie family -- Alex, his brothers Lachlan and Gavin, and sister Beatrix are hysterically funny. Their joshing of each other is the kind of sibling chatter we all would have liked growing up and as adults. Jenna comes from America with her grandmother's ashes and is drawn into this loving, boisterous family. Ms. Anderson's use of Scottish dialect is wonderful, and it doesn't interfere with your reading. It adds to the enjoyment. Between her way with words and her sensual love scenes, you are there in the book, in the scene. And speaking of her way with words, here are samples, "...nearly insatiable wonderment of new love." And, "...the fact that she didn't reject him filled his heart with unfathomable joy." With the love and humor, there's danger which is written so well and culminates in a wonderful, surprise ending. Enchanted Skye is an outstanding book."

This week I offer the legend from Enchanted Skye.

My Hook:
In the Celtic lands, there are tales told of seals who walk the earth as men and women. From the coastal areas of Scotland and Ireland to the Shetland Islands, on to the Hebrides, and up to the northern Faroe Isles, these seal people are known for their dark beauty and lovely brown eyes. Legend has it they are able to doff their waterskins and live as any human might. They are the Selkies and Roans of lore.
Such women are much desirable as wives, as there are none better able to love a man. A man fortunate enough to come upon a Selkie woman sunning on the rocks may take her to wife, provided he hide her seal skin and hide it well. For no matter her love of him and the children she bears him, the call of the sea will take her away the moment she finds her hidden skin. A Selkie man, with his seductive ways, will come and go, and take his fill of any woman who catches his eye. Only if she adds seven tears to the salt of the sea, however, can she capture his wild heart.

 Rose Anderson writes beautifully every time, and Enchanted Skye is no different. She makes me believe in selkies, makes me want to BE a selkie, her descriptions of their legends and lives are so intimate and lovely.

Knee-deep in Santa's workshop
